Chapter 36- Bloody Morals

"Were you alive when the angel lands got desecrated?"
I hesitated, then nodded.
"Yes... But I was very young. All I remember is black fires and shouts of wounded soldiers. My mom hid me away."
"That must have been scarring for you, to be away from your home because a army knocked on your door."
"I..." I went quiet, looking away. I did not know what to say. It wasn't scarring exactly, but I had never really been where I was supposed to. Seeing my face, Shirina quickly changed tack.
"When are you going to leave?"
"As soon as I can."
"But why? If you leave too early your wounds will cause you trouble."
"I don't have a choice."
She simply nodded.
"it will be a day or two before your wounds are fully healed."
"That's too long."
"Well sorry Solus of the Angels, it is what it is."
I sighed in defeat.
"While your here, can you keep telling me about your people? I do not know much about the angels, besides fairy tales and rumours."
When I didn't answer she continued.
"It is said that angels are the most celestial of all the races. How is this true?"
"When we are born, we are just like any mortal. We get silver blood, multi coloured wings, and our powers are more neutral. However, if we are born in our ancient lands, we gain immortality and usually our wings turn a lighter colour."
"How does that work?"
"When my race was born, we lived solely in the angel lands. We didn't know others existed. We used to appear as harpies more then human, and oftentimes we didn't have a care in the world. The combined might of many generations of angels using magic has made it a holy land. Crops never die, its never cold, and all of our animals were strong and healthy. We survived as the land does, and as we grew as a population we were very careful to keep most of our world intact. If we cut down too many trees, if we burned and hurt, we would all die out."
"Seems to me your lands really were heaven."
I nodded. "That they were. And we respected them."
"So when the demons attacked..? And the hunters killed...?"
"We lost. The demons came from below a few hundred years ago, and attacked us. They fought in the silver fields, where usually angels went to lay in the grass and watch the stars. They killed, slaughtered, and desecrated our homes. They never reached our city, but by the damage they wrought it didn't matter. Our lands started dying, and with them, us. We had no choice but to leave by the hundreds or else suffer a death worse then torture. The corrupted magic was changing us, and some angels went mad and turned on us."
She put a hand on my shoulder. I realised I was so tense as I recalled the battle that my hands were bleeding from digging my fingernails in them. I flashed a quick apologetic smile and relaxed.
"I think I've heard enough. I can see that means a lot to you, even though you were not there for the fight. Angels sense of morals and duties have always fascinated me. Its written in your face, in your blood, I can see it. Do not worry, Solus, you do not need to recount any more gruesome memories."
I felt relieved.
"Thank you, Sherry."
