Prologue
I was sleeping in my cave when it happened. It was the middle of the night and I lived miles away from any city or town. I was torn awake by the sound of heavy footstepsjust outside.Thump, thump, thump, they went, over and over. I crawled out of the ledge i had made into my bed and carefully peered out the mouth of the cave. There! A cloaked figure, a woman I think, was sliding through the shadows, darting between the trees. She was carrying some sort of bundle, bread maybe, when she turned her head. To this day, I still don't know if she saw me but she instantly vanished behind a large rock. Then, a moment later, she reappeared again and ran off into the night. I crept out from my cave and tip-toed to the rock. Hidden behind it was a stack of leaves and stick, about a foot high. I carefully removed each leaf and twig until I discovered what was hidden beneath. I gasped in shock and wonder. For there, amidst the forest and rock and night, was a child among the most gorgeous I have ever seen! I bundled her back up and brang her into my cave where it was much warmer. I think she was about one, maybe two at the time and terribly underfed. It was at that moment I knew what I had to do. I would take care of this child, and cherish her as my own. And I would call her Diana. Diana Crossfire.
