Chapter 2
I stand in the corridor, and turn to look at the doorway. I let out a breath when I see that it's still visible. Then I turn back around and head towards the end of the tunnel. But when I take one step, the end seems to be a lot closer. I take another step, and the end is right in front of me. I step through the opening and look around.
I'm in a spacious, well-lit chamber. A couple feet ahead of me is a large throne, and atop that throne sits a woman.
She has long, silver hair, but her face looks young. She wears a puffy purple dress, with silver trim. She's smiling at me. It's a kind smile, and her eyes are smiling too.
"Welcome, Door-Drifter," she says, standing up and taking a few steps towards me. "I am Maiden Isobel. What is your name?"
"Infinity Foxley." I hold out a hand, and she shakes it. "What's a Door-Drifter?"
"A person who is capable of traveling through the doorways."
I frown. "Some people AREN'T capable?"
Isobel nods her head. "These doors exist only in the past - hundreds of years ago, in fact. Most people were not alive at that time."
"MOST people?" I raise one eyebrow. "I'm fourteen years old. I wasn't alive during the Middle Ages."
"This incarnation of your soul on the Earth wasn't alive then. But a few of your first lives were."
My eyes widen. "Wait.. you mean, like, reincarnation?"
Isobel smiles and nods once more. "Yes. With each new incarnation, a soul gains more energy and power. Souls who have only had a couple of incarnations do not have much energy, but souls who have had many incarnations have a lot of energy."
I nod. "Okay..."
"The past, present, and future all exist at once. While you were in the room with that door, the past version of the room had the door still standing, and the present version did not have a door. Because your soul was also on Earth in the past version, you were able to sense the door. Did you hear any odd noises, or feel a shift in the air?"
I nod. "Yes. I heard whispers, and the air felt heavy."
Isobel clasps her hands. "That is because your soul was connected to the past version. And when the door suddenly became visible, it is because you used your large amount of energy to create a wormhole of sorts - tear a hole in the fabric of time. That is what you did when you turned the key."
"Wait, why could I see the key from the beginning, even when there wasn't a wormhole?" I ask, furrowing my brow.
Isobel's eyes grow wide. "The key was visible the entire time?"
"Yeah. Is that bad?"
Isobel shakes her head. "No. That is... exceptional. It means that your connection to the key was even stronger than yours with the door. In other words, you did more than just 'exist at the time when the object existed.' " She pauses. "The key was created when a group of five wizards and witches all focused their relatively small amount of energy at the same spot. The energy connected, forming the magical key." She looks pointedly at me.
I breathe in sharply. "One of my first incarnations was in the form of one of those wizards?"
Isobel warmly smiles. "Yes. You did not simply exist when the key was created. You helped create it."
