Chapter 1

‘Lucinda!’ Mother whispered ‘wake up darling! It’s your birthday! You’re 10 now! Aww my baby’s all grown up!’ she hugged me tight. ‘Wha..?’ I answered still half asleep; I hugged my mother back ‘now go get ready! Just because its you’re birthday doesn’t mean that you get a day off… Happy birthday dear.’ I slowly got off my bed and got ready. When I finished I looked at my bright orange hair and silver eyes. Today I was going with a black t-shirt with ruffles at the top and pale blue shorts. I nodded in approval and went downstairs.

‘Morning dear! How’s my little witch?’ Oh and did I mention that we were witches? Well yeah. Were witches. We live in hiding because those stories about people being burned alive because they are ‘witches’… well, they are true. Now we have to pretend we’re humans so that the witch hunters don’t find us. Witch hunters… I hate them. They’re the only people that know that they’re witches in this world and they hunt us down. Other creatures too but in the modern world, nobody believes that witches, vampires or werewolves exist. Well newsflash, we are real. ‘After breakfast I want you to study your defensive spells and healing potions ok honey? ’She said as I sat down at the table and ate my breakfast. Mom and I live in the countryside along with serval other witch families and moms at the top. And by ‘the top’ I mean that mum’s the strongest of all the witches in this coven. Well, I think it’s a coven. A coven is basically a whole bunch of witch families that follow the strongest witch and I’m not sure if the few families that we have, plus ours equals a witch coven. Whatever ‘Hey mom, can I go over to the tree house?’ I asked ‘well… you haven’t done you’re spells young lady but… I don’t see why not. Go on child.’ She sad lightly nudging me to go. So I opened the front door and walked to the treehouse.

I finally made it to the tree house. Well at first it doesn’t look like one. At first it looks like a sapling ‘Shurinku’ I said opening my hand and I shrunk to the size of an ant and I looked up at the familiar treehouse. This treehouse was mostly tree, almost no house but we made small platforms on many branches so it’s a treehouse-but-not-really. I opened up the wide trunk and climbed up the stairs that we hollowed out inside the tree. ‘Hey what’s up?’ I said cheerfully as I looked up at my friends: Madeline (troublemaker/witch), Demetri (troublemaker #2/werewolf), Violet (the smart one/vampire), Elliot (the shy one/ werewolf) and Tyson (the ‘parent’/werewolf). We talked and played around with our abilities until noon.  ‘We should probably go back home.’ suggested Tyson ‘yeah…’ said Elliot ‘I don’t wanna miss lunch’ ‘Aww come on Ty!! I wanna play some more’ begged Madeline. ‘Yeah!’ Said Demetri nodding his head in agreement. ‘well, Maddie, Demi, I am kinda hungry..’ said Violet ‘ok then its settled’ I said ‘ as soon as we finish lunch, we’ll meet up at the treehouse again’

I looked up at my old oak house ‘it needs a paint job’ I thought and as I walked up to the front door I saw that it was wide open. ‘Odd’ I thought, mom never leaves the front door open. ‘Mom?’ I called out. Then I saw a man on the kitchen floor along with my mother pointing her long wand out at him. I’ve never seen mom’s wand. It looked like a long branch but at the bottom, there are long, white, wavy lings that curved into swirls. I looked at mom with wary eyes and she looked back horrified, ‘DUCK!’ she yelled and I did exactly what she said and covered my head. The swirls on her wand glowed a bright, white light and a blue ball made of electricity bolts appeared at the tip of my mother’s wand and blasted a man behind me. ‘AHHHHHHH’ I screamed, closing my eyes shut as hard as I could. ‘Oh baby, I’m so sorry you had to see that…’ she said comforting and hugging Me.’ come on we have to go’ she said as she grabbed a small pouch. Witch’s pocket. It could fit anything inside and it wouldn’t weigh any more that it is and its size wouldn’t budge. She jammed all our witch related things, a few blankets, pillows and canned food into the pouch and gave it to me. ‘You hold on to this and you don’t let go ok?’ she said ’get in the car’ I jam the pouch in my pocket and headed my to the car. That is, until another man from behind me grabbed my mouth and the world went black.
