Chapter 2: Georgia
Everyone thinks that living in a spade suit is just fine, but they are wrong. When I turned 12 and I went to the testing building I was actually kind of happy when I found out that I was in the spade suit, but this way of living is a terrible thing. Sorting people into different areas and giving them superpowers. It may sound awesome that everyone gets superpowers, but you’re wrong. Having superpowers is horrible. It’s illegal to use them for anything but training.I’m living on my own now because my little brother, Jamie, just turned 12. He took the test but he got into the heart suit. I was heartbroken. My father used to live with me in spades, but he just recently had to go into the testing building again because he was incredibly sick. He had to retake the test to see what suit he would be in. Instead of getting spades again, he got heart. I knew it was for the best because then Jamie could be with his father, but not for long.
I sometimes get letters from them though so it’s not all bad, but last week I got a letter from my dad saying that Jamie had been getting more and more ill by the second. The letter said that Jamie was dying. I got so scared and for some reason angry that I devised a plan to run away. I could get Jamie and my dad, but I can’t stand to see them in pain. The only way to get out is through the heart suit and over a gate that Jamie told me about. But I would have to find a way to get over to the heart side. I only have one plan, but if I get caught I will be killed. The only thing I can do is blow it up. You can’t climb over the wall that separates each suit. The wall is a smooth surface and there are no grooves in the wall. Plus it’s really easy to get explosives like fireworks and dynamite in the spade suit. People use them all the time when they are trying to transfer energy or do any other project. I walked to the shop right by the wall that divides the spade and heart suit. This is where the explosives are sold.
“Hey, how much would about 30 sticks of dynamite be?” I asked knowing I need at least 24 sticks. I know because we learn some weird things at school.
“What do you have?” The salesman who was standing behind the counter asked.
“I have a deer and a couple of polished rocks,” I responded, hoping that’s enough.
“Uhh, sure. Why do you need dynamite?” The man asked.
“You’ll find out soon enough,” I said suspiciously.
“Okay,” the man said.
“You can find the deer at the abandoned house down the street,” I said and pointed to the peeling white house.
“Thank you,” The man said.
“And here are the rocks,” I said as I pulled out a velvet pouch of shiny rocks. I poured them out onto the counter.
“Okay, have a nice day young lady,” The man said kindly. I almost feel bad that I’m going to blow up a wall so close to his shop. Good thing he’ll be over at the abandoned house.
I set the 30 sticks of dynamite below a bush by the wall, so no one would see what I was doing.
I’m currently running back to my hut by the lake to gather my stuff. I grabbed the chess set that my mom had hand-carved me before she was killed, some food, water, and a blanket. As I’m running back to where I’m going to blow up the wall I stop at a small shop. The man who owns it was a good friend of my dad.
“Hey, will you give this letter to my dad somehow?” I said cautiously.
“Sure,” The man said happily. “I’ll see you tomorrow right?”
“Uhhh, yeah,” I said quietly.
I continue to run through the small town. Once I get to the bush I put my pointer finger and my middle finger to my heart for about three seconds then I bring my fingers up to my mouth and blow on them. This is a way of hoping someone stays safe, or that you hope they have a good happy life. I light a match from my matchbox and throw it into the pile of dynamite. I heard a couple of thuds as I’m running back to take cover. Then BANG! They explode and the wall falls. I walk through the broken wall and think,
I hope someone in a heart suit will help me because everything from here will be formed out of luck!
