Chapter 13: Leo
After Apollo showed us the view from the roof of the building, we went back down to the ground on the escape ladder. It was a pretty tall building, so it took a while for all three of us to get all the way down with all of our stuff with us. Once I reached the soft grass, I laid down for a minute to get a quick rest. We all got a small drink of water from a canteen, then I stood up and stretched out. I don't know how long we were out in that room, but I felt like I hadn't moved in a while.I helped Georgia up while Apollo quickly stood. He gestured for us to go one way which led into an alley. We walked in that direction for a few minutes, until we turned around a corner, and saw two, huge, magnificent castles, identical to each other. They both had tall, sleek quartz walls, with vines growing up them. There were four towers on each structure, each with one big round window at the top. The shackle roofing of one of the castles was a bright red, and the other was baby blue.
“Follow me,” Apollo directed, “I know a way to get inside that has a low chance of being found out about.” He started walking over to one side of the red-roofed castle.
“Are you sure that's the right way to go? It seems like that area has a bunch of guards nearby,” I questioned.
“Yeah, there are about five guards over there . . . that seems oddly still,” Georgia noticed. She had a point. It didn’t seem like any of them were blinking or breathing.
“They’re decoys,” Apollo told us, “they’re 3-D holograms, made to look like guards. That's the whole point, making people think that they are real people so they don’t try to break in.”
We all crept over to the door, the shadows getting longer and longer. Apollo demonstrated how they were fake by punching right through one of them. I grabbed the cold brass handle, turning it.
“After you,” I told them, letting them walk in, “What's in there, anyways, Apollo?”
“We’ll have to find out,” he said, a slight grin forming on his face. He seemed like he knew, but I let him surprise us.
I walked in after them, making sure to close the door behind me as quietly as possible, so I wouldn’t alert the guards. It felt pretty cold in the room that we entered. There wasn’t anything in the room, making it seem like it was just an empty cellar. I noticed that Apollo slipped something in Georgia’s pocket, and I was just about to call him out for it when we heard footsteps coming from the room above.
“Quick, hide!” I said, running around frantically.
“Behind what?” Georgia asked, seeming just as worried.
I tossed Georgia the bow and quiver, watching her shoulder the quiver, then grabbing an arrow and knocking it. I unsheathed my daggers and got in a ready stance. Georgia noticed that Apollo didn’t have a weapon, so she stepped in between him and the doorway from which we heard the guards coming from. She drew the cable, pulling it to her chin.
We heard the footsteps get closer, stop, then one of the guards said something that we couldn’t hear. I adjusted my daggers, having the blades point down, then crept up by the steps. I figured I could disable at least one of the guard’s legs before they noticed me.
I saw the shadows of the men on the steps, getting closer and closer. Finally I saw one emerge, then another. I managed to cut two of their ankles and made them fall. Georgia shot three of the guards, but more kept coming. Only a few had guns, and all the others just had batons. We fought as many of them as possible, but there were too many for us. One of them managed to get a good shot, and fired at Apollo. I jumped in the way of the, and the blast hit my shoulder, the searing pain shooting all over my body. Another shot, and this time it hit Apollo square in the chest.
“NO! Apollo!” I heard Georgia scream before collapsing over his body, tears streaking her eyes.
I don't know what came over me. Seeing Georgia in pain over the loss of her ‘best friend’ made me angry, and I lashed out on the remaining guards. Even though I fought as hard as I could, One of them got to Georgia and knocked her out.
Once I was finished with all the guards, I jogged over to Georgia. She was out cold, so I picked her up. It would be too risky to come back for Apollo’s body, but I quickly dragged him outside so once Georgia woke up, we could have a nice proper goodbye.
I had to jog in the shadows while carrying Georgia so no one saw us. I found another rundown shack for us to sleep in, this time there was some hay spread out on the ground, so it made a good firm soft to lay down on.
I bunched up some of the hay to make a pillow-like hill and gently set Georgia down on it, brushing some of the hair out of her beautiful, chocolatey face. I just noticed that she had light freckles sprinkled across her face. I finally decided to lay down, so I dropped my pack, put my quiver and bow down, and unstrapped my sheathes and set them down too. I got out the blanket and draped it over the two of us, making sure that there was enough of it covering Georgia, and closed my eyes shut, ready for a night full of weird dreams.
