The Doctor's Office

Winnie comforted Amandla in the doctor’s office. She thought about what to say, and what to do. She tried to put herself in Amandla’s shoes, but she couldn’t. “Alright,” she said in her head, while quietly taking a breath.

“Dr. Ivory, will be in soon to run some tests.” a nurse says. Winnie and Amandla both nod. The nurse smiles. She walks inside carefully and signals Amandla to follow her. The lady leads Amandla to a nurse’s office.

There, she was told to sit on an examination bed. “I will be recording your height and weight today.” The nurse told her. Amandla then, stepped onto a weight scale. Her total weight turned out to be 115 lbs. “Now, for the height.” the nurse tells her. The nurse calculates her height and writes it down on paper. “You’re 5'5”.” she exclaims.

“Is that good?”

“Of course it is,” she pauses. “Amandla? Is that your name?”

“Yes.”

“Well Amandla, your height goes with your weight. That’s perfect.” The nurse says happily.

“Oh,”

“Is something wrong?”

“No there’s nothing wrong.”

“I had some kids. Five of em.” the nurse apprises her. “I had my first kid when I was 15.” the nurse says shaking her head in disappointment. “The second child, at 17. A beautiful baby girl.” she says while hopelessly trying to remember that day. “I didn’t want to have an abortion or take birth control.” the nurse laughs. “So I put them up for adoption.” she wails.

“Did you keep in contact with them?”

“No” The lady tells her. Amandla didn’t know what to say, so she kept her mouth shut until the doctor came back for her check up.
