~Chapter One~
(The picture is of Faith)SAFIRA'S POV
Sapphire. Purity. Wisdom. This is what I am. I was laying outside my house in the grass thinking, as always. It was the middle of October, my sisters birthday. "Safira!" I heard her voice exclaim. I jolted up, surprised. "Faith.. You scared the living DAYLIGHTS put of me.." I muttered. "Oh, Saf! You act like you're so much older than me when i'm only 2 months younger!"
She laughed, sitting next to me. "You haven't wished me a happy birthday yet.." She whispered. I sighed, but cracked a smile. "Happy 15th birthday Faith." I finally said. Faith smiled contently, but it quickly turned into a frown. "Mom wants me to be a council member..." Faith muttered. "That's what most opals do." I laughed.
"Unless you want to be a warrior.. But that job's for boys." Faith's navy blue eyes rippled with sadness. "I would love to be a warrior Saf. Fighting for a better world." She looked at me for reassurance but I shook my head. "Mother would KILL you if she heard you say that." I exclaimed, annoyed at Faith.
"What are you going to be? Your "Specials" are wisdom and purity." Faith said, seeming to ignore my comment. I bit my lip and thought her question through. "Perhaps a scholar." I suggested. "I do love writing." Faith's eyes changed emotions and lit up like a light. "But there's so many choices with wisdom! You can be a sorceress!" She exclaimed excitedly.
I shot her daggers with my eyes. "Faith, what has gotten into you? I going to be a scholar and you're going to be a council member." She sighed and stood up. "Well, the job choosing is still in 3 weeks." She started walking away, but turned around. "Aaron is lucky. He still has 2 years to think about his career as a garnet." With that, Faith walked away.
Aaron. He was very lucky. Only 14 years old but he already had his whole life planned out. Yes, he was annoying, as most younger brothers, but he also had a sense of knowledge and he was always reading. Not very garnet-like. I heard small footsteps approaching as my cat, Meritt came over to me with a grumpy face and snuggled next to me.
"Meritt?!" I exclaimed, surprised. The old cat was always hanging around with Aaron or Faith. I didn't smile, but sighed contently and stood up with the cat in my arms as I started walking back to my house. As I opened the door, I crashed into Aaron who was eagerly reading ANOTHER book. Startled, Meritt leaped out of my arms and scurried into the house.
"AARON!" I exclaimed, trying to keep my cool. "Stop reading and walking! Besides, a loyal garnet shouldn't be reading so much anyways." I looked away in disgust. Aaron's blue eyes kept the same emotion. Peace and happiness. "That's another stereotype. He said, closing the book and running his hand through his brown hair.
"Whatever." I walked into the house and ran into my room. Why was everything so easy for Aaron? Even Faith admitted that. I pushed the thought aside and peered out my window at the deep blue sky. 3 more weeks. 3 more weeks and then my fate would be decided. 3 more weeks for Faith and I to live normal lives.

She fiercely fought them off and from then on was feared by everyone except Rose, her best friend. Other/Backstory: Dawn has always suspected that there was more to life than just birthstones. She tries to fit into the Ruby stereotype, and does a good job of it, though she knows, hopes, believes there's more. She, just like the Ruby gem, is passionate and full of love, and every now and then is too proud for her own good. She plans on asking Faith, Aaron (who she likes but refuses to acknowledge the feeling since according to the city everyone has a specified match) and Safira if they might know if there's anything out there besides her city, and wants to become a Council member like Faith because she thinks that they know what goes on in the outside world.
