Chapter Eight

Alina sat, glumly on her new bed. The walls of the room she was in were painted a dreamy aqua colour, which blended with the sand-yellow carpet to give an impression of being under the sea. On the redish-brown wooden surface of the bedside table sat a streamlined black CD player, that looked cool enough to have been in a Bond film. Currently, it was booming out the classic notes of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Alina had no clue why Miles had insisted that his family adopt her. Certainly there was no way in which they were related. And they had only known each other for about a week; they weren't all that close. Her thoughts were interrupted by the slamming of the front door. Miles must be back from school, Alina thought. She was right. She heard loud footsteps on the stairs and there was a knock at her bedroom door and Miles bounded happily into the room.

"Hi Alina" He said to her, energetically. Slightly less enthusiastically, Alina replied.
"Hi Miles. How was school." Miles shook his head at her. "Boring as ever." he replied, solemnly. And then he perked up a bit and laughed. "Flynn asked after you." He told her, grinning.
"What did you say?"
"That you were fine, and just settling in."

Alina grinned unable to hide the smile that crept on to her expression. Downstairs, a door slammed loudly. Mile's playful expression disappeared immediately.
"Alina, I need to tell you something. You are probably wondering why I got my family to adopt you. Well the truth is, I need your help..."
Before he could continue, his phone rang. The ringtone sent a chill through Alina's veins. It was a song she knew well.
"My little china girl, you shouldn't mess with me, I've ruined everything you are." Embarrassed, Miles quickly switched his phone off, and the awkward seconds stretched between them. Alina knew the words that came next.
"I'll give you television, i'll give you eyes of blue...
I'll give you a man who wants to rule the world."
