“Correct me if I’m wrong, but you didn’t have wings yesterday, right?” Jesse asks me as she enters the gym. I laugh and jump off the tightrope before floating to the ground.
“Hello to you too.” I smile. She laughs,
“Sorry, Hi. But seriously why are they out again. You didn’t…” She looks around “Did you hear something again?” She whispers. I laugh and shake my head.
“No no no, the rest of us lot aren’t going to be saying anything for a while. What with many of us being caught up with you humans.” Jesse smiled,
“Right, I forgot that to ‘high and mighty guardian angels’, we humans are simply chores that you need to do.” I snort and laugh to myself. Jesse can tell that I wasn’t laughing only at what she said.
“What? What’s so funny?” I shake my head,
“Ugh,” I shivered, “We do not, ‘do’ you.” Jesse burst out laughing and I smirked
“You make Joseph seem like a pedophile.” Jesse shook her head, calming down.
“What about Joseph?” We hear Madeline walk in,
“Hey Mads,” I say,
“Hey Tanj, Jesse. Whatcha you doin’ with your wings out?” Madeline asks. I shrug,
“It may come as a shock to you, but it does take some energy to completely erase something from sight and matter.” Madeline huffs and rolls her eyes at my sarcasm.
“Anyway Tangent, as a matter of fact Joseph wants to see you.” I roll my eyes,
“Fine,” I say and get up, ready to be bored to death by lectures from the old (and quite traditional) guardian angel of Madeline. Before I leave I turn and quickly shout,
“And my name is not Tangent, it’s Tangela!” then I close the door and walk to the stairs. Smiling at the laughs that I hear coming from Jesse as I leave. At first, I hated being put with a troublesome and (dare I say it) stupid child named Jesse. I had so eloquently put it as acting ‘like a holy jiminy cricket’. It wasn’t my first assignment (as I call them), but it was definitely my hardest, and most aggravating. The trouble with the demons and almost directly breaking the rules of the guardians for her hadn’t been very enjoyable. But from all that we’ve been through, Jesse has now been the best assignment I’ve ever been given. I hope that we’ll still talk in the afterlife. I can train her for her missions! I get to the top of the stairs and look at the door. Joseph wasn’t a bad guardian, in fact, he was probably (by textbook standards) the best of the guardians. But he just wasn’t… fun. I doubt that he would put up with Jesse and her mannerisms. Given that I had to try so many times for her to finally start making the right decisions on her own. He would have probably given her to another guardian and moved onto his next one. But he already had Madeline so I was put with Jesse. I’m very happy about that. Now we’re the best of friends. I knock on the door and immediately I hear a loud voice,
“Yes, Come in.” I open the door and blink before realizing what I’m seeing. Joseph was sporting his wings like I was, but they were different from what I remembered. Not in any way I knew how to say though.
“I see you’ve noticed the wings.” He said, snapping me out of my concentrated gaze. I nodded,
“What happened?” I asked, he smiled,
“I have been ranked up.” I gaped,
“What?” I asked,
“Ranked up.” He repeated, “Now, you know I am not permitted to telling you what my next purpose is, but I must tell you that after today, I shall not be returning to my guardian duties.” My eyebrows furrowed,
“Who’s gonna-?” Joseph nodded.
“Of course,” Then he gestured to the side of the room where another young angel (my age) was standing. I hadn’t even noticed him there before. He had on a suit, (typical for a traditional guardian angel, though I preferred casual clothes), his wings were (the traditional) white (mine were black, which I think look pretty cool), and his hair (of course) was black (mine’s blonde, and a bit too short to be considered a girl’s haircut). The only thing that wasn’t stereotypical guardian angel about him was that his hair looked like to would never be tamed. Other than that, he was probably the only young guardian angel that Joseph would approve of. Disregarding whatever good job any of the others did (mostly me)
“This,” Joseph started “is Jacob. He’s going to be Madeline’s guardian angel from now on.” Jacob turned to me and held out his hand.
“Hello, Tangela.” I nodded at him,
“Hey, call me Tanj.” I gave him a small high-five.
“I was also,” Joseph said, making me pay attention to him, “hoping that he would teach you some more things about being a guardian angel.” I raised my eyebrows,
“Really? How many assignments have you been on?” I asked, Jacob was confused for a second but then shook his head.
“I haven’t yet, miss. But I did pass the test well.” I sneered,
“The test?” I deadpanned, then looked at Joseph, “You want me to listen to this neophyte because he passed the test?” I asked, Joseph sighed,
“Well, I have also tested him in my own field of knowledge about the angels and I think you will see that he is strong in areas in which you are not.” I rolled my eyes.
“Oh yeah, of course. What? Does he quote the angels whenever explaining something? Because that always makes sense to the humans. Does he kill without a second-thought? Does he not take any chances at all regardless of how many lives could be saved? I need to know the details please.” I said, turning to leave.
“Tangela,” Joseph started, but I cut him off.
“Joseph, I don’t care whether he passed the stupid test or not. If he doesn’t do his job properly, I’m going to take over being Mads angel.”
“What about Jessica?” Joseph asked, I gritted my teeth.
“Her name’s not Jessica!” I shouted, “Her name is Jesse! And I’ll guard the both of them. I’m pretty sure I’ll do a better job than this suck-up will ever do.” I say, gesturing to Jacob.
“Tangela!” He shouted, I shook my head. Waving my arm at the both of them,
“No, I’ve voiced my concerns and threats. I shall be returning to my assignment now. Jesse and Mads probably need someone to time their gymnastics routine.” I glanced at Jacob,
“Don’t wait up.” I finish before turning around and walking out the door.
