Chapter 1

I knew that there wasn’t much time before I broke. How many others were unbroken? Yesterday it was three, today it’s two. I walked up to the small window in my cell and looked outside. The outside world has changed since I was brought here. The grass is faded and dry, the sky is dark and cloudy, and there wasn’t a soul in sight. I can’t even remember why all of us were brought here in the first place. I slouched down to the cold stone floor. It was as hard as ever. My thin gray dress hardly kept me warm and it has worn a lot in the past years. “Wake up! Wake up” A rigid voice yelled, hardly anyone slept here anymore, but I think the guards like to yell at us. The guard’s steps finally turned down the hallway of the unbrokens, it was completely empty, excepting me and Umit. Umit has been here for more time than me, but only by a year or so. He hardly talks and I constantly hear him writing on his wall, with the stone the guards don’t know he has. The guard I see is new, his face is rigid and covered in scars. “Oi, well if it ain’t the famous unbrokens,” He sneered and lets out a loud hard laugh, “Well yeh won’t be unbroken fer long, today I get a go at yeh.” He banged on the bars of my cell door, “Well I wasn’t expecting a little dearie like yourself,” His laugh booms against the bare metal walls. This isn’t the first time I’ve met a newcomer, who thinks he can break me, “To who do I owe the pleasure,” The guard was surprised at how nice I was, “Well little dearie, if you really must know, they call me Sheber, you must be the famous unbreakable Asha and the other unbreakable Umit, eh boy?” The guard turned towards a cell, and Umit, as always, stayed silent, “Speak boy! Yer tellin’ me that yeh won’t speak and that little dearie will?” Umit looked up for a moment and studied the guard. “You’re new,” was all he ended up saying. The hours went by after the Sheber left, Umit and I were anticipating the worse. I could hear Umit muttering to himself, “What if this time I break? What if this guy actually finds a way? What if he breaks her?”
“Don’t worry about me Umit,” the muttering stopped and he became, once again, silent, but I couldn’t stop myself from muttering.
What if he does break me?
He won’t.
You don’t know that for sure.
But I have to be strong, so that they can't break us out.
What if they never come?
They will.
You don’t know that for sure.
You’re right, I don’t.
