Chapter 5

I sit in front of the fire, browsing Amazon on my laptop to take my mind off things. Mom snores on the couch. The doctor told us she shouldn't take stairs for a while.
I sigh and close my laptop, instead pulling the blanket around me and squeezing my eyes shut. A few tears leak out. Nobody is safe around me. I'm cursed. I stand up and quietly slip out the back door; I shouldn't even be around my own mother.
I stroll through the backyard, autumn leaves crunching underneath my feet. The wind whispers through the trees. I pause. It almost sounds like.. words..
I shiver as I notice a dark apparition forming in front of me.
        The Reaper.
He speaks: "Callista, after the deaths of everyone you are close to, you will become the Fairy of Death."
I try to back up, but I'm rooted in place. "The... the what?"
The Reaper steps closer. "The Fairy of Death. It will be your second, hidden identity. I will call on you whenever there is someone who must die."
"But..." I stammer. "I- I thought you did that. I thought you appeared by the side of dying people and carried them off."
The Reaper laughs. "I do. And you will, too. I am afraid that you will never stop seeing death."
I hug myself. "I- I have to get back..."
He laughs again, and seems to dissolve in the wind.
I take off running towards home. When I reach the house, I let myself in through the back door. It's oddly quiet. Mom's stopped snoring.
        Mom's stopped snoring.
I rush over to the couch where she is, and rest my trembling hand on her chest.
        There's no beat.
Blurry spots fill my vision. I weakly grab the phone and call nine-one-one. When the ambulance gets here, they pronounce her dead.
        I can't breathe.
The police come, too. The same policewoman as before looks at me with sad eyes as she takes my hand and gently leads me to her police car.
I can't stop thinking about what the Reaper said:
"You will never stop seeing death."
