Two Minds
I heard the door of the cabin open and footsteps sloshing through the mud at a rapid pace towards me. I let my eyes close now as I felt someone scoop me up and carry me away, probably towards the cabin. I heard the door open again and a woman give a small gasp as I felt the warmth of the cabin envelope me. My hair felt wet but something on the back of my head felt hot as the pain throbbed in my skull. I tried to move to touch my head as I gave a little groan but his arms just held me tighter.“Oh Ruvel! She’s hurt! You must let her stay inside! You must!” The woman’s voice begged as she reached for my hand and took it gently, holding it to her chest. “She can sleep in Abigail’s bed! We can ma-” The woman stopped short as my hand was tore away from her roughly as strong fingers wrapped around my wrist.
“She will not take a child’s bed because she was harmed in consequence of her own foolish actions!” The voice of my captor growled, obviously the one who had grabbed my hand and pulled away from the woman. “Casper, she sleeps on the floor if anything. She should have to sleep in the barn but I know you won’t allow that now.” He growled to the person holding me up now as he stomped away to go fetch his horse. Casper did as he was told and he started walking, jostling me with every step. I slowly forced my eyes open, not quite unconscious yet and I squinted up at Casper. He looked down at me, his eyes an icy blue that seemed to freeze me in place. His hair was black and cascaded down around his face, making it hard to see his features clearly. He then quickly looked up, his gaze firm as he carried me, not seemingly feeling any pity for me. My eyes were slowly drifting shut now and my body went limp in his arms as I passed out.
(Perspective Change)
“Yn gartrefol Cysgodol annwyl, fod yn dawel nawr.(1)” I cooed to Shadow in my native tongue, knowing he wouldn't understand otherwise. I grabbed onto the reins so he couldn’t run off again and I wrapped my arms around his neck, trying to comfort him. “Bachgen Hawdd, rydych yn iawn nawr.(2)” I murmured as I pet his mane, cursing the girl for getting him so spooked. Once he was calmed I climbed onto the saddle, the reins still in hand as I shivered slightly. “Hyup!” I commanded him, and with that he moved forward at a slow pace as I lead him onto the trail towards the cabin.
I scowled as it came into view, my anger bubbling up again as I thought of how foolish the girl had been. Once we got closer I climber off of Shadow and lead him towards the barn, figuring he needed a rest. I quickly took off all of his gear and gave his shoulder a loving pat before walking away, back to the barn doors. After cooling off a bit, I ran my fingers through my hair and walked towards the cabin, my boots ruined after the abuse they had taken while trying to track Shadow down in the dark of night.
I opened the door slowly, not wanting to wake anyone that might already be resting. The cabin was silent now and mostly dark as the children slept. I shut the door back and walked inside, trying to be quiet though as to not wake Abigail and William. I was about to search for Elizabeth but she found me first, walking out of her room with a bloodied white cloth. She looked at me, looking pale just from the sight of blood but she managed a small grin.
“She’s in our room, Casper is with her now. Although she is not awake…” She said with a soft voice, taking the same consideration as I for the children. “You may go see her.”
I nodded to her before walking towards the door to her room, knocking quietly before opening it slowly. I saw her laying in the bed, unconscious now as she breathed slowly, Casper at her side. He looked up at me and nodded before standing and walking towards me, putting his hand on my shoulder before walking past me to check on his family. I sighed and walked over to the chair Casper had been sitting in and took a seat, running my finger through my long hair again.
“Oh Annice….You must trust me...I’m only doing this for your own good…” I mumbled softly as my pale blonde hair fell into my eyes while my gaze searched her face. She showed no sign of consciousness as she laid there, her expression blank. I reached out and caressed her cheek, running my fingers through her raven hair gently with my other hand. I then took my hands away from her as I sighed softly, telling myself to behave. I reached out and took her hand gently, closing my eyes as I started to doze off. “You’re too dangerous…”
1. At ease dear Shadow, be quiet now.
2. Easy boy, you're alright now.
