Chapter 2
After our encounter with the huntsman, we ran back to the Belladonnas’ as fast as we could. As we approached the house, Ghira and Kali walked out.“What is it?” Ghira asked.
“Huntsman,” Blake said, panting. Ghira smiled.
“Ah, so you found them.” I shook my head, thankfully (due to my wolf heritage) not out of breath.
“No,” I said. “Well, yes, but that’s not why we’re here.” Adam nodded.
“They’re here looking for the White Fang,” he told the chieftain. “They’re looking for you.” Ghira’s smile disappeared, and he looked at his wife.
“Gather them.”
After half an hour of the five of us waiting in Blake’s room while the White Fang decided what to do, I grew tired of sitting around. I stood up from my spot leaning against the wall next to Adam and Ilia.
“I say we go down there,” I said. Everyone looked at me. “I mean, I can look like anything, Ilia can camouflage, and Jacob can turn invisible. Ilia and Jacob can extend that to the two of you, and we could go down there with no one knowing.” Blake shook her head.
“I don’t know,” she said. “My dad seemed pretty adamant that we not go down there.” I shrugged my shoulders.
“So?” I looked around. “When was the last time we actually followed the rules?” No one answered. Ilia stood up beside me.
“I think Steel’s right,” she said. “I know I can extend my camouflage to one of you for long enough to find out what’s going on, and I think we deserve to know.” She looked at Blake. “I mean, we were the ones who found out why the huntsman were here in the first place.” I nodded.
“Yeah, they wouldn’t even know the huntsman were looking for them if not for us.” Silence. After a while, Adam stood up with us.
“I agree,” he said. “I think we’re old enough to know what’s going on.” I smiled, and we quietly slipped out of the room. About halfway down the stairs (still concealed from view), Adam and Jacob turned invisible, Ilia and Blake grew camouflaged with the dark walls, and I turned into a mouse, small enough to be inconspicuous.
“-if we don’t. We have to let them know we mean no harm,” we heard Ghira say as we slipped into the room unnoticed. I quietly slipped past the crowd of faunus and closer to Ghira. “They think we want to turn the tables on them. They simply don’t know that we only want equality.” A girl with cat ears, brown hair, and brown skin stepped forward. Sienna Khan.
“Yes, but what happens when they don’t care?” she asked. “The only thing they want is to remain on top, and they’ll take us down no matter what our goal is!” Ghira looked at the floor, and I could’ve sworn we made eye contact, but he said nothing.
“Sienna,” Kali said, “they may not care, but if we fight them, it will only prove them right.” As Ghira’s gaze drifted my way again, I slipped back through the crowd to the stairs.
“Back upstairs,” I heard Jacob’s voice whisper in my ear. I nodded and jumped up the stairs before turning back into myself. One by one, the other four came into focus, and we said nothing, but just simply looked at each other, thinking the same thing: the White Fang is divided.
An hour later, Ghira opened the door to Blake’s room and looked around at us.
“Come on,” was all he said, and he led us down the stairs to the main room. All the faunus had left, and now it was just him and Kali. He stopped and turned around to look at us. “I know you came down during the meeting.” I looked at the floor.
“It was me?” I asked. “Wasn’t it?” He nodded.
“Although, if it wasn’t for the eyes, I never would’ve known.” He looked at the five of us. “I will admit, it took you awhile longer than I thought it would.” We looked up at him.
“What do you mean?” Blake asked, voicing all of our thoughts. Ghira smiled.
“For a long time, I’ve been wondering when you would stop listening to me and would listen to yourselves instead. I had no doubt in my heart that you would end up down here after the fight you put up when I told you to stay upstairs.” He looked at Adam. “You have something you want to say.” It wasn’t a question. Adam hesitated but nodded.
“It’s just . . ,” he started. “I think we’re old enough to know what’s going on, to be a part of everything.” Ghira nodded.
“You want to be a part of the White Fang.” Adam nodded again. “Is this true for all of you?” We all nodded, except for Jacob. “Jacob?” My twin looked at me, then at Ghira.
“Well, I want equality. I really do,” he said. “But I’m afraid. I don’t think I would be much help to the cause.” He paused. “I think I’d be better off on the sidelines.” Ghira nodded.
“If that is what you wish.” My ears perked up.
“Wait,” I said. “Do you mean-”
“Yes, Steel.” Ghira cut me off. “If you wish, you shall become a member of the White Fang. I do believe you’ve proven yourselves worthy of the task.” I smiled at Adam. “But be warned. The tasks appointed to you may prove more difficult than you think.”
