Forever Lost

Forever Lost
Jackie woke up in a hospital room. She could see nurses around her, bustling around. Everything was quiet.
"They must be trying not to wake me," thought Jackie. She opened her mouth to tell them that she was awake, but something was wrong with her voice. It wouldn't work. She tried to talk, but nothing came out. A nurse approached her and mouthed some words. Jackie frowned. "I'm awake!" she tried again to speak, but then realized that the nurse's cheeks were shiny with tears. The nurse grabbed a notepad and scribbled down some words. Jackie squinted to read it.
"You turned up the vol. of your music. Too loud. Might never hear music again :( " the paper read. Jackie looked at the nurse in surprise. Why couldn't she hear anything? Jackie grabbed the pad and pen, and wrote her own message: "y cant i hear? i cant even hear myself. did u guys take out my voice box or what?"
The nurse scanned the message, then wrote down a few words. When Jackie saw them, she could feel her heart beating. Her head was pounding. Her mouth was dry. Two words, that was all - yet Jackie felt as if it was the end of her world. The paper read this simple sentence: "You're deaf."
Jackie fell back against her pillow. She couldn't listen to music again. Her whole life - gone. Never again. Deaf. Deaf forever. No more music. Jackie felt as if she was drowning, even though she was surrounded by air. Her heart beat faster and faster. Tears pooled in Jackie's eyes. She was drowning; drowning in a pit of molasses. She was being pulled down, down, down, away from everything. Never. Forever. Ever. Jackie started breathing quickly, and the nurse placed a hand on her arm. Jackie flung the hand away and began crying.
Music... gone.

She was forever lost.
