We meet Romans
When I come back into consciousness the world is fuzzy. That's probably why the guy standing in front of me looks so amazingly cute. I blink, but his face is still there. Wow. He really does look like that...Wait a minute! I jerk upright, completely awake in an instant. Who is this dude, and why is he leaning over me? Where's Annabeth? For that matter, where am I?
"Hi." He says. He holds out his hand. I shake it.
"I'm Ajax."
"I'm Ella." I return. "Hey, isn't Ajax a character in Greek mythology?" Is all I can think to say next.
"Yeah. My mom named me that on purpose, but I don't know why."
I know what he's thinking. In Greek mythology, Ajax eventually suicides.
We don't say anything for second. I look around and see that I'm in a small, dark cave lit by a flashlight.but the blackness prevents me from seeing anything more. I'm the first one to speak.
"So... What happened back there? Can you--"
"Explain?" He finishes. "Yeah, I'll try. So, you're from Camp--Camp Half blood, right?" He asks, the name alien on his tongue. I nod.
"Okay, so you guys know about Camp Jupiter." I nod again. He shows me his arm. On it are four tattooed letters; SPQR, and fourteen black lines. I understand.
He begins to bandage my shoulder as he starts his story.
"We were patrolling the area around camp when we came upon this hole in the ground. Lying next to it was a plastic bottle, a Gatorade bottle, but the label said 'Dis'. We thought, well, that is was a coincidence, but soon we started finding similar holes all over the place and we had to accept that these were entrances to the underworld and that something was going wrong. We didn't know what to do until Minerva showed up."
A jolt of recognition runs through me as I hear my mom's name in Latin. I gasp in pain as Ajax suddenly jerks my bandage into a tight knot to keep it from slipping.
"Sorry!" He says breathlessly, "I'm not very good at tying bandages!"
He blushes and, looking away, returns to his story.
"Anyway, it was weird for Minerva to show up, because, you know, she doesn't have any children, at least in our camp, but her message was plain: something was going wrong in the underworld, and she wanted some of us to go and check it out. So I got my first quest." He finished plainly, helping me stand.
I stare at him, still taking it all in. "So, where is everybody else?" I ask finally, grimacing as I try to move my arm.
"Outside, waiting for us." He answers, picking up the flashlight and heading toward the cave entrance. "Oh, and I wouldn't do that if I were you."
I stop trying to move my arm. "Oops." I mutter. Things are just getting weirder and weirder.
