chapter 2
Bright sunlight filtered through Andy’s vision before she opened her eyes. She yelped at the sight of Toki and Sukki leaning over her. Sukki’s bobcat face was so close to hers, she could smell her breath, the tangy scent of fresh rabbit rolling off her toung.“Sorry, Andy!” toki yelped. “You were talking in your sleep, and I was worried about you.” He scuffled his paws in the dirt.
“Here’s some water.” Sukki’s soft voice didn’t match her hard, black eyes.
“Thanks. I’m ok now.” She dipped her toung in the puddle of water that was forming under the liquid soaked moss.
“The whole pack is going to the pond across the notail’s blackpath,” Toki informed her. “You wanna come?”
“Sure, toki. You go ahead, I’ll meet you there.” Toki took off towards the woods.
Andy looked around. The clear-space in the middle of the camp was empty. Andy got to her paws and started to walk, but just as she got to the tree line, a horrible howl split the air. Andy took off in the direction of the sound, and soon arrived at Alpha Iro’s cave. The sounds were coming from inside. Andy poked her head around the corner.
“Tuuh, grandson, you don’t want to do thi-” the words were abruptly cut off as Tuuh spoke.
“Oh, I think I do. Once you’re dead, I’ll become Alpha! A great win for me, but such a loss for your family.” Tuuh made a mock pouty face. Don’t you think, gin?
“Oh, yes,” replied the ginger-furred wolf lurking in the corner. “And your son, spice was just beginning to trust you.”
Andy gasped. Gin. Spice’s trusted mate. This couldn’t be happening. But it was. Andy took a step forward, and her paw landed in a pool of blood.
“Tuuh, you are my family.” IRO whispered. Tuuh laughed coldly.
“Not anymore.” Another second, and IRO’s life was ended.
Andy flew down the path to the pond. When she arrived, she suddenly felt faint. She staggered down the path toward her mother, Allana, who was just slipping into the water with her friend, Arianna, and her mate, Ario. Suddenly, she fell. Her mother got to her first.
“Andy! What happened?” Andy could barely hear her. Her mind was going dark, as if a liquid blackpath was washing in through her ears.
“Andrea!” her mother called again. Somewhere, Andy found the strength to utter two small words.
“Iro…” she whispered, “dead.”
