Chapter XIII

Chapter XIII
Fern slowly drew back an arrow from her bowstring and aimed it at Thord’s back. She glanced at Thor for permission. He gave a small nod. Fern closed her eyes. Three, two, one…!
Twang! The arrow flew out at incredible speed. Fern couldn’t see it as it came towards Thord. Yes! This is going to be it! Thord is going to- Fern’s thought broke off as she squeaked in surprise. Thord swivelled around and his hand shot out. The arrow just froze, millimetres away from it, hovering in the air. Thord scowled disdainfully. Then, with a careless motion, he flicked it away. Then all rage went away from his face and he chuckled. It sounded deep and ominous. He pointed his hand to where Fern crouched and flicked his fingertips up. Fern yelled in surprise as she began to lift up. She floated over to Thord who stood, scanning her. “So, Fern, we finally meet.” His dark voice echoed around the cavern.
“How do you know my name?” Fern whimpered.
“Simple. I listened in to your conversation.” He smiled ruefully, his cold golden eyes locked on Fern’s face. “See?” suddenly he disappeared into thin air. Or so she thought. A small white cabbage moth was in his place. “You… You were the butterfly that perched on my hand!” Fern exclaimed. “You heard our plan!”
Thord reappeared as a human again. “So I did. Where is your little companion?”
“What? Thor?”
“Yes, indeed.”
Thor crouched behind the pipe as he listened. He gathered up all his courage, and then he quickly jumped out. “Over here!” he shouted as his dagger zoomed through the air. Thord merely flicked his hand, not even looking up. The dagger doubled back the other way, flying into the corner. Its depressing clang resounded around the walls.  Thor soon joined Fern, unable to do anything. “Is there anyone else down there?” Thord moved so he could see anyone behind the pipe. The Harpy crouched there, shivering with fear. “Ah, we have a traitor here!”
Thord aimed his staff at it. The Harpy flew across the room as Thord swung the staff over his head. The Harpy was sent skidding across the floor. “I am afraid I have a special treatment for traitors.”
“No master. No, please!” The Harpy begged him, shaking with fear. “No!”
“Yes.” Thord grinned sickeningly. “Say goodbye to your world.” He raised the staff skyward. Slowly, the snake’s eyes began to glow red. Colour washed over it, turning it jet-black. It unwound until its neck was free. It twisted and frayed about. Then quickly, its eyes flashed yellow. There was a shrill scream and when Fern looked, in the Harpy’s place was a pile of ash. The snake flicked its tongue and turned back to stone. Thord turned back to Fern and Thor. “Now,” he drawled, “To get what I wanted.”
Fern blinked with surprise. “What?” Thord ignored her and reached forward. Fern tried to back away but the attempt was useless. Thord locked his eyes on Fern’s neck. He reached forward, down Fern’s shirt and closed around an object. She heard a snap and Thord’s hand came out, clutching the amulet.
“Hey! Give that back!”
Thord didn’t respond. He stared at the gleaming necklace on the palm of his hand. “I’ve got it.” He whispered. “I’ve finally got it.”
“Got what? What are you talking about?”
Thord tore his eyes from it and glared at Fern. “Ignorant girl! Do you not realise what this is?”
Fern shook her head. “What is it?”
“Foolish child. This is the key to ultimate power! This is the Blessed Amulet!”
“The what?” Fern asked dumbly.
“The Blessed Amulet,” Thor said quietly, “Grants the key to ultimate power. It multiplies the holder’s power by twenty.”
“I knew that with that amount of power I could rule the world, so I enchanted a hydra and sent it to find it. It did, and kept attacking your village. But now I have it. And now, what should I do with you?”  Thord grinned. “I think just slitting your throat would be best.”
Thord moved and unsheathed Thor’s dagger and held it close to Fern’s neck.
“Prepare to meet your end.”
