Chapter X
Fern heard footsteps thumping her way. She was scared, but she knew what to do. She knew she had the element of surprise at her will. She gathered up her courage and, taking knife in hand, burst up from the ledge with one movement. The solid yellow eyes beneath a coat of snow looked taken aback, then furious.“Thor! Get up!” Fern screamed as the yeti’s arm crashed down on her. Thor shouted with anguish as its other one came down on his hand. The Harpy, now free, gave a chilling shriek of pure delight.
“Fern! Grab it!” Thor wheezed under the weight of the yeti’s arm. Fern, dislodging herself, dove over to the Harpy and snatched at its leg. It flailed about as she successfully pulled it to the ground. The yeti snarled. It lashed out, gripping Fern hard around the waist.
“Help!” she yelled, clawing at the thick fur around her. Thor jumped up and helplessly tugged at it. The yeti just laughed in bitter amusement. He kicked Thor and he fell to his knees. Fern suddenly punched the yeti in the eye, jumping down.
“Thor! No!” Fern shrieked. The yeti walked over to him and smiled coldly.
“Say goodbye to your little friend” it snorted. He lifted Thor high in the air and threw him down the mountain, into the face of certain death.
“No! No, Thor!” Fern cried. She faced the yeti, trembling with rage, ignoring the insults the Harpy was giving.
“Huh! Good riddance! It was actually quite fortunate that happened.” It taunted.
Fern took a step towards the yeti. The Harpy gave a low whistle. “You better watch your step, yeti. That girl looks dangerous.”
“You monster!” Fern growled, shaping her hands into fists. “You stupid damn monster!” She leapt forward with a burst of enraged speed. The yeti stumbled backwards. Fern jumped on it, yelling with rage. Cursing it, she battered the yeti with her fists, propelling it backwards towards the edge of the mountain. It roared with anger and pushed her off. Fern fell to the ground, grunting in pain.
“Now, you die too!” it bellowed. Fern jut had enough time to roll sideways, dodging the beast’s fatal blows. The yeti crashed down his fist and froze. He tried painfully to pull backwards but there was no movement in his position. Fern realised that the yeti was stuck. Taking this opportunity, she lunged forward and unsheathed her knife from its scabbard. “This is for killing Thor!” she shouted, jumping high in the air and, coming down on the yeti she swiped the knife vertically. The yeti staggered backwards, losing his balance. His right hand lay on the rocks, surrounded by a spreading pool of crimson. It wavered back and forward, trying to keep it’s stability equal on both sides. Fern strode over to it. “Goodbye.” She said casually and aimed a painful kick at its stomach. The yeti let out a piercing scream and toppled back, into the deadly rocks of Tetra Mountain.
