Escape?
I use the pole to nudge my rope through the bars of my cell. I fashion a lasso out of it and manage to swing it out of the window. When I try to climb, the rope falls back in. I keep trying to hook the lasso around something. Finally, I manage to loop what must be a chair. Quickly, I grab my pole and stick it into my leggings. Then, I climb up the rope.I just manage to get through the hole when the chair begins to slide. I watch as it falls back into my cell. There goes my rope. I shake my head and slide the nearest rug over the hole. It'll have to do for now.
Pulling my spear out of my leggings, I position it so it's ready for anyone and anything. I notice a long hallway and I approach it. Listening carefully, I hear nothing. So I sprint down the corridor as fast as I can. I notice a locked door on one side, and I quickly pick the lock with my knife.
Behind the door is what looks like a supply room. Coils of rope line one wall, and apples are piled in a bin. Water bottles are sitting in one corner. There's a backpack hanging on one wall, so I grab that and stuff a few water bottles and apples into it. I'm just reaching for the rope when I hear footsteps.
I hold my breath and duck behind the bin of apples. Muffled voices fill the room.
"Henry, did you leave the door unlocked?" says a voice. It sounds like a woman.
Someone else clears their throat. A man speaks. "No, I remember locking it." he says. It sounds like there are only two people in the room. The man must be Henry.
The woman talks again. "Then how in the world did someone get in?"
Henry says, "I don't know, Laura. Let's just rid the room of all supplies and then lock it, to be sure."
The woman - Laura - tells Henry that she agrees. I hold my breath until I hear someone approaching the crate I'm hiding behind. They said they would rid the room of all supplies. That means removing the apples from the crate!
Suddenly, I leap up and run towards the window on the opposite wall. Henry shouts something, and Laura tries to stop me. I yank free and shatter the window's glass with my spear. Then, I throw my backpack out and quickly leap through the frame.
