His name wasn't originally going to be "Tama". His mother died not long after he was born. She was only able to communicate the first two syllables of his name before dying.

He had two older brothers, Kemono and Senshi. However, they died during an attack on their village. This attack is also the reason Tama has a problem with fire. Most of the warriors of the village were gone at that moment, fighting in other battles. This left the village vulnerable. Tama and his brothers, as well as the few soldiers left, tried to defend against them, but failed. The village was burnt to the ground, and Tama was the only one who managed to crawl(he was badly wounded) away with his life.
