Deciding
"I need time to think about it!" yowled Redstar angrily. Now that he was so old, he'd think twice before going into battle with anything, from a whole Clan of badgers to a stray kittypet. When he thought about it, he realized that he was falling apart. 'So many moons,' he thought. Redstar used to be a young leader and in his prime, but now life was getting harsher with every fragile step he took. Looking down on his Clan, he thought something he'd never thought before. Life was better for the rogues and loners. Maybe he should make a new Clan, and be an elder instead of a leader. If everything went smoothly, he would end up dying peacefully in the elder's den. He was on his last life, after all. The idea gave him newfound energy, and he bounded out of his den with the speed of a falcon. He stopped when a small, ginger kit walked up to him and said, "Redstar! I beat Flowerkit and Larkkit in moss-ball!" He was slightly embarrassed that he so carelessly ran into this kit. "Amberkit, your father has things to do." said Goldenpelt, Redstar's mate.
"She has a lot to learn." she whispered. Awkwardly, he dipped his head and then ran to the Burnt-Tree, his favorite hunting place. Legend had it that the blackened tree was once a giant, silver birch which towered over all of the other trees. Then one day, StarClan decided that it was time for the tree to perish, so that the cats there wouldn't start worshiping it instead of them. When the birch refused, StarClan sent a storm in their haze of fury, a storm of three things: fire, ice, and shadow. Neither the ice nor the shadow could defeat the tree, but the fire fell upon it and scorched it completely. When Redstar saw the tree, he knew instantly that his decision was clear.
He was leaving the Clan.
