Go To Sleep
Of course. How could I be so ignorant? The incoming frost would certainly kill those two innocent flowers before any bee or butterfly could come and pollinate them (and even if they did survive the frost, it's not the season for pollination--no bee or butterfly would come until spring, which would be too late). And what could I do? Well, I didn't think it would be easy to dig up the strawberry plants and take them inside. No, it was better not to do that. But that was my only plan so far. After a few moments of contemplation, I decided to just leave the plants alone. It was natural for plants to go to sleep (I tried to avoid thinking about the word "die") in the winter. If I tried to save these two strawberry plants when it was their nature to die--no, go to sleep--I would be defying nature. As if humans haven't already been doing that for thousands of years.
So I continued on home, dreading what would happen the next day.
