chapter two - summertime sadness ;;
I let out a yawn pink tongue curling up inside my mouth as I focused on the large glass window. It was early in the morning, and the sun was still rising, turning the sun a melancholy orange. I frowned a bit ; it was beautiful outside, and yet I was unable to leave myself. Maybe I meowed loudly enough, my housefolk will get up and let me out. So that's just what I did - I plopped my charcoal hindquarters right outside their bedroom door and meowed as loud as I could. After the third time, the tom-human came out, grumbling something. He let me out into the garden, and I gleefully raced outside into the summer warmth. After stretching my legs, I slowly padded over to the tall wooden fence that was supposed to confine me to the yard. I tensed my muscles and lunged, barely making the top of the fence. I pulled myself up and let out a huff of breath, pale blue gaze narrowed. There it was. The forest, with it's lush canopy of green, trickling streams, and soft symphony of sounds, was beautiful this early in the day. No humans were out in the yard, so I was able to hear everything clearly. I couldn't help it when my mouth opened a crack, heart swelling in awe. I was contemplating whether to hop down and explore the wide expanse of trees when a voice sounded below, almost causing me to fall right off the fence."Hello?"
I shook my gray head, heart still pounding with nervousness, and looked down to find a young tom staring up at me with wide green eyes. He shuffled his paws nervously and spoke up again. "Uh, hi. I'm Cedarpaw ... but you probably don't know what ShadowClan is ... I live there. Are you a kittypet? Well, that's a stupid question of course you are. What do you do?" He paused for a moment, and I was grinning, about to reply, when he continued. "Sorry, I tend to talk a lot. My mom tells me I should keep my mouth shut if I want to learn something." He stared at the ground sheepishly, shuffling his paws before looking back up. "What's your name?" I took a quick breath. "My name's Melody," I meowed, "I'm a housecat, and I have heard of ShadowClan. I've always wanted to go out into the forest and meet the clans, but ..." I stopped, cheeks hot, suddenly very interested in a small rock. Cedarpaw cocked his head. "But what?"
"...But I'm scared they will hurt me."
The brown tom grinned. "If I bring you, they surely won't hurt you. Wanna come?"
My blue eyes widened ; this was what I had wanted for my whole life. BUt I glanced behind me at the house, the place where I grew up, the place where I was loved. Did I really want to leave? "Give me a day to think about it," I finally answered slowly, shakily. He nodded, striped tail bobbing back and forth. Already beginning to dash away, Cedarpaw yelled, "See you tomorrow!" I giggled a bit, then retreated inside the house.
