Chapter Fifty
(Time to find out the REAL alternate I make! Get ready!)+++
TRIS
"HOW DID YOU inoculate yourself against the death serum?" he asks me. He's still sitting in his wheelchair, but you don't need to be able to walk to fire a gun. Bit like Shauna.
I blink at him, still dazed.
"I didn't," is all I can say.
"Don't be stupid, Tris," David says. "You can't survive the death serum without an inoculation, and I'm the only person in the compound who possesses that substance."
I just stare at him, not sure what to say. I didn't inoculate myself. I know I didn't. The fact that I'm still standing upright is impossible. Or maybe it's because-
No. There's nothing more to add. It's impossible. Leave it at that.
"I suppose it no longer matters," he says "We're here now."
"What are you doing here anyway?" I mumble. My lips feel awkwardly large, hard to talk around. I still feel that oily heaviness on my skin, like death is clinging to me even though I have defeated it.
I am dimly aware that I left my own gun in the hallway behind me, sure I wouldn't need it if I made it this far.
Yeah, big mistake there. Way to go, Tris.
"I knew something was going on," David says. "You've been running around with genetically damaged people all week, Tris, did you think I wouldn't notice?" He shakes his head. "And then your friend Cara was caught trying to manipulate the lights, but she very wisely knocked herself out before she could tell us anything. So I came here, just in case. I'm sad to say I'm not surprised to see you."
"You came here alone?" I laugh at him. "Not very smart, are you?"
His bright eyes squint a little. "Well, you see, I have death serum resistance and a weapon, and you have no way to fight me."
"Don't count on that!" I hear someone shout. It sounded like...
No way!
But then I know it was true that I heard him. Because I see him running to me.
Tobias.
He's holding my gun. He must have seen it on his way and picked it up.
Thank God.
"Tris, catch!"he says, throwing my gun to me, and I catch it. He then runs past David and snatches his gun.
"Well well, Tobias Eaton," David says. "I should have known you'd come save your girlfriend."
"Shut UP about her," Tobias says, holding David's gun at him. I do the same with mine.
"You wouldn't shoot me." David believes we're not going to shoot him.
He thought wrong.
We both pull the trigger at the same time, and David falls from his wheelchair, lying motionlessly.
He slumped out his chair like Eric did when Tobias shot him.
Tobias pulls me closer to him by my waist and fits his mouth to mine.
We will always have each other.
I have Tobias.
He has me.
That's how it's meant to be.
