The Team Assembles
The amazing coconut trees hung heavy with their fruit. The crashing of the waves had faded into the background. Sand seemed bigger then the ocean; rolling all around us in gentle waves. For hours I just stared out at the horizon waiting for the skyline of New York City to crack the unending sky. But it never did. DJ and I didn't speak, we didn't even acknowledge each other. I didn't even notice him until his bawls broke through my mental walls. I watched his tears streak his sand covered face and I realized I wasn't crying. Why wasn't I crying? I caressed my crusty cheeks to feel if they were wet. They weren't. As I was pondering over this, a moan echoed throughout our beach. I looked over to the 3 bodies lying behind a group of rocks to protect them from the elements. DJ stopped crying and hauled himself over to them. I looked to them, dying to go over to help, I cried out to DJ "I can help let me." He nodded. He hooked his arm under mine and half dragged, half led me over to them. Gently I got down on all fours and crawled on my 3 good limbs. It had come from the boy on the left. He was clearly in better shape then any of the others but I was worried about his head. I lifted his head in my lap and stroked his head. "C'mon wake up," I covered his eyes so they wouldn't burn out when he opened them "just open your eyes." I waited and waited he wasn't waking up. "Damn it! Wake up!" Suddenly his eyes flung open and screamed. He leapt up and ran around yelling. I wanted to run after him and grab him but my ankle wouldn't let me. He ran for what felt like ever not stopping. He must've hit his head. Finally he collapsed and coughed and wheezed and cried. Gritting my teeth I inched towards him as DJ was clearly in something like shock. I wrapped my arm around him and let him cry on my shoulder. Then he stopped and whispered "Who are you and where am I?"
"I'm Cassi and I think I have the slightest idea of where we are..."
DJ suddenly snapped out of his shock and barked "Where are we?"
"The Palmyra Atoll." I said softly.
