Goodbyes & The Capitol
My father and mother rush into the room. I am sitting on a couch, and the run in. My mother hugs me, and I grasp her warm arms. I don't yet realize that I may never see them again. My father gently rubs my shoulders, which are shaking roughly because I am sobbing so hard it racks my entire body. We don't say anything. As Peacekeepers rush in to escort them out, my father comes back, and places a small, wrapped package in my hand. He doesn't glance back as the Peacekeepers force them out of the room. Once the doors shut, they ushered me through another door, where no sunlight shined upon my face. Instead, I was greeted by menacing, heavy grey clouds that seemed too close to the ground. I wipe the back side of my hand on my cheek and step up onto the Capital train nearby. I get on, and a few moments later, the other tribute is with me. Norran? Borran?"Hey." I say to him. He gives me a curt nod, and he sits in the row across from me. We meet our mentors. A 30 some year old Katniss and Peeta. They seem nice enough. We all sit down together. I've read about them in History books, but I don't dare ask if what the book says is true.
"Hey, guys. Aspen and Zorran, right?" Peeta says. We nod. Katniss turns and speaks. "Game Plan. Ready?" I look at Zorran and he seems to be as shocked as I am at how quickly this is all taking place. "All right. First off, you two are now a team. I will be blunt. The chances of both of you being alive long enough to have to break off an alliance are very slim." I am so shocked at how blunt she is telling us this. Peeta gives her a look that says 'be a bit more sensitive, these are just kids'. They both look tired. If I did the math correctly, I guess they have been mentors for almost 25 years. That's a lot of dead tributes they've seen. There have been three victors from District 12 since then, but one of the consequences far partially starting the war, (The Capitol won) Peeta and Katniss will have to mentor every District 12 tribute together until they die. "But you guys did." Zorran whispers.
"Yes, but we both had a lot help from other tributes. Your case may or may not be the same." Peeta says. Katniss tears up. She must be thinking of those tributes. The Careers, the District 11 boy and girl who saved them, and the countless other that died. That they watched. All of a sudden Peeta's eyes cloud over, and He grips the table so firmly I'm half embracing my self for it to break. Katniss whispers in his ear a little bit. Rubs his shoulders, and he eventually comes back. The history book never said anything about Peeta having some sort of sickness. It scares me. "You guys should eat up." Katniss commands. We eat fancy Capitol food until we get to the Capitol and we hear people screaming outside for us. We shyly wave at the endless crowd of people, and finally make it to a large hotel where we find our room. I share a room with Zorran, but the room is so large, we each have separate Queen sized beds, full bathrooms, and living rooms. It's amazing. I meet my stylist. Semmi. She has short blue hair and a few earrings. They wax my legs and armpits. They put my hair into some odd bun for me to sleep in so I'll wake up with curly hair. The rest of the night included a meal, but I don't really remember it. It flashes by, and soon I am in bed, curled up in a ball trying to sleep. I think about how I will spend tomorrow. It's a free day for us tributes. I await sleep, and it seems to take forever, but eventually a wave of unconsciousness envelops my mind, and my eyelids slowly close. I welcome it.
