Gone
I wait and wait. People are there, swarming around me, asking me questions, but I just shake my head and push them away. I sit out in the cold sea air as the beach empties out and the stars begin to shine, faintly tonight, as if through a pale grey gauze.I have a headache and I've been out here, sitting on the sand, praying to every God I know, for the last million years, when finally Percy returns. He climbs out of the crashing waves, amazingly dry, and looks around, as if expecting someone to be there.
I find my voice. "Annabeth left to go to her cabin an hour ago." I say emotionlessly. Percy's gaze finally finds me, hidden in the sand, wrapped in a blanket somebody threw on me. I can't remember who. Then Percy opens his mouth to speak, and it's as if I knew what he was going to say even before the words leave his lips.
"She's gone."
