It's actually an eagle. Eagles represent intelligence, which is what Ravenclaw is - the house of intelligence.
Some say it's a raven because it makes more sense in their eyes, with the house being "Raven"claw.

Look on Pottermore and read more on why the eagle is the mascot for Ravenclaw, and I think it even says why the raven isn't my not so sure.
