In a storm, Silverlake gives birth to Hawkflight's kits: Winterkit, a white cat with ice-blue eyes, and Cinderkit, a gray cat with indigo eyes. However, they become Winterpaw and Cinderpaw and fall for the same tom, Cloudpaw. In the first battle, Cloudpaw gets seriously injured, and Silverlake dies from a throat wound. Winterpaw, upset, stays at Cloudpaw's side as much as she can. The medicine cat, Mistyfern, recovers Cloudpaw, and the apprentices take their final assessments. They all pass and become Winterstorm, Cloudfur, and Cindercloud. Another battle occurs where Winterstorm fights against a mottled brown ShadowClan tom, who seems to be easily overpowering her. She sees a flash of gray and notices Cindercloud dash towards her. Winterstorm is grateful when she flings the tom off her, but that vanishes when Cindercloud turns on her. Unseen through all the fighting, Cindercloud attacks Winterstorm. She tells Winterstorm that she has stolen Cloudfur's heart and has left her heartbroken. Winterstorm fights back, shocked by her sister's treachery. Her heart tells her not to tell any cat as she returns, bearing wounds from her sister's claws. The littermates avoid each other. Once, Winterstorm and Cloudfur are taking a walk alone. The two say they love each other. All of a sudden, Cindercloud leaps out of nowhere and onto Winterstorm. Cloudfur tries to protect Winterstorm, but Cindercloud wounds his neck. Winterstorm keeps fighting her, but Cindercloud is suddenly ripped off her, and Winterstorm sees a border patrol around them. The cats are taken to the medicine den, where Mistyfern is able to let them recover. Winterstorm and Cloudfur tell Oakstar, and Cindercloud she is exiled. One day, Cindercloud leads a group of cats against the clan. The rogues are overpowered, and Cloudfur kills Cindercloud. Then, Winterstorm is expecting kits. Mistyfern helps deliver four kits, Stormkit, Nightkit, Heatherkit, and Frostkit, later Stormblaze, Nightstreak, Heatherstorm, and Frostwing.
