A fusion's appearance differs on how the two gems communicate.
Opal has two eyes while having extra limbs. The two do find positive interest in each other, but have they ever actually constructed each other's mindset? They may be combined physically, but their minds are not fused.
Garnet has two arms but three eyes. Of course Ruby and Sapphire have a strong emotional connection, but often they disagree (like in Keystone Motel) - even if they only argue once in 100 years, it is a lot in gem time.
Malachite has more legs than normal because the fusion seemed forced, causing the fusion to seem deformed. Yet, Jasper tricked Lapis into fusing, leaving their minds connected.
Rainbow Quartz is theorized to only have one set of arms due to Pearl's jealousy, even though she had found an extreme love for Rose Quartz.
Sugilite, Stardoynx, and (possibly) Alexandrite would be considered perfect fusions. Their minds and physical structures are in sync.

i hate haunted houses but its different
