In my English, we had to take a survey about the privileges we had, and one of the questions were "I have never had someone mock me or hurt me because of my race and/or religion."
Some idiot started laughing at that and I nearly took his head off. I did snap, and said "At least you don't have to worry about people in a truck calling you a Muslim piece of shit when you're not even Muslim and telling you to return to ISIL, you piece of crap."
Is it bad that I said that? Because I'm really starting to regret it...

You're not really copying since your story line will be original. You're just using an idea people use to get characters, which is totally fine in my opinion.
