In other areas of the UK you would have been at risk of being hurt working in this role because the WVS often went to the bombed areas to look after the casualties. However, if you were a member of the WVS in the Wrexham area you would have likely been helping to organise, find homes for and deal with complaints concerning the evacuees arriving from the Liverpool and Merseyside areas. This was a difficult job because the evacuees from this area were notorious for being badly behaved, lice ridden bed wetters!
Your other tasks would involve knitting and mending socks, raising money for charity (like the Rhyl Comforts fund which provided items, like a radio, to the men on board the HMS Rhyl), and organising food canteens for troops and evacuees' families in the area.
This job would mainly have been for middle class women as it was a voluntary unpaid role. So a WVS member would need to have some sort of money behind her to be able to afford to give her time to the job.
