Chapter 34: January to April

A few weeks go by, and soon enough it is February 8th. Hallie and Mercedes are in my room while we hang out and discuss Valentine's Days' soon arrival. "Okay, so has Greyson, like asked you to be his valentine?" Hallie asks, Mercedes looking almost as eager to hear the answer as Hallie is. "No, but I don't want him planning anything for Valentine's day. He did enough for me on Christmas. I want to do something for him instead."
"Oh my Gosh, you guys are too cute. We should hang out with you guys more so we can absorb your cuteness." Says Mercedes. I laugh, "You have been hanging out with me everyday this past week; what more do you want?" Hallie laughs. "We're going to have to kidnap her, Mercedes." Mercedes agrees, "Definitely." We all laugh.

Greyson asks me a few days later to be his Valentine and I say yes, but I make sure he hasn't planned anything yet. I tell him I just want to spend the night with him alone, nothing too fancy. So on the night of February 14th, I smooth out my simple dress and stand by my closed door. I check the time, and see that Greyson should be here any second now. He appears at my window shutting it behind him. "Hey. What do you have planned?" He asks giving me a sweet kiss. I smile "You'll see." I hold both of his hands, biting my lip to contain my happiness. A smile breaks out anyway, and I drag him onto the floor, where I have laid a million blankets and pillows. Against my wall is a small VHS tape T.V. I put a tape in and hit play.
"Dude, I didn't know they still made VHS tapes!" Greyson says excitedly. I giggle and lean back on him. "Well, they do. Just watch." We watch and the first thing that shows on the screen is my face up super close. I'm saying something like, "Is it on? Is it recording?" I back away from the camera and say, "Hey, Greyson! It's Avalon, and at this point in my life, I happen to be your girlfriend. Cool, right? Well, I just wanted to make a video showing some of our best moments so far in our relationship and to basically just have this for you for whenever you are feeling sad or unloved. Just remember that no matter what happens between us, I will always still be your best friend, whether we are dating or not. So, um, enjoy!" I giggle and blow a kiss at the camera, then cover it up with my hands. First is the video of us singing 'A Drop in the Ocean' together, and then, since I guess we left the camera running, Greyson asking me to be his girlfriend in the hotel room, plus me saying yes. There are a bunch of snippets of us kissing different times from the past few months.
After, there is the camera moving over a bunch of my polaroid pictures, showing multiple from our adventures on Christmas day, and many times after. Next, there is a video of Greyson attempting at doing my makeup, which ultimately ended pretty bad. There is footage of us trying to dance (and failing), followed by a video of us laying on a bed next to each other just being completely stupid. Next, we are playing truth or dare in a tape. There is a montage of us doing weird cute things, and then I am talking to the camera again.
"Okay, so that is it, but please remember just how amazing you are. You are the best. Happy Valentine's day!" I kiss the camera lens and the video is over. Greyson smiles a cheeky smile of gratitude and kisses me passionately. I kiss him again and again, laying down with him on top of me. I reach up blindly, hitting record on my camera I had set up on a stand earlier. He smiles into the kiss, as well as I do. I am so impossibly happy that I just don't want the moment to end.

Later in March, Greyson stands up in the middle of lunch on our lunch table, yelling, "Hey! Could everyone just quiet down?" The room falls silent. I look at him confused, and he smiles, saying, "Avalon Starr! Is there an Avalon Starr in here? Avalon, are you in here?!" I am laughing so hard as I raise my hand, covering my mouth with the other one. "Ah, there she is!" Greyson says. He is just so funny. I catch Jackson video taping it all.
"What are you doing?" I whisper, lowering my hand, giggling. "Avalon Starr! Will you do me the honor..." I continue laughing as he says in a big dramatic voice, "... and be my date to Prom?" Mason hands him a single flower, which Greyson then holds out to me. I stand up, brush off my jeans and stand on the table in front of him. I accept the flower, giggling. I wrap my arms around his neck and kiss him briefly and sweetly. "Yes." I reply. Everyone is cheering as Greyson kisses me once again and my face turns bright red. "You're so cute when you blush, you know that?" He says, taking my hand and helping me down off of the table.

Hayden asked Hallie to Prom on March 16th, Lana asked Jackson on March 20th, Mason asks Taylor on April 1st. When she answered him, she said, "No, I'll pass." He was confused for a few seconds, and then she smiles, saying, "April Fool's." Yolanda got asked by a few guys, but she only says yes to a guy in her French class named Jeremy.
"What happened to Sterling? I thought he'd ask you." I say to Yolanda. She just shrugs, says, "Didn't work out." She nods her head in his direction, where he sits with his draped around a girl who's name I don't know. "Aw, you really liked him, didn't you?" I respond. "Eh. I thought I did, but I was just excited someone took an interest in me, so I convinced myself I really liked him. It's kinda like how..." She trails off, not wanting to finish that thought. It's like how you thought you were in love with Hayden.
Mercedes is complaining to me the next day about how Diego hasn't asked her to Prom yet. "He will." I reassure her. I was pretty wrong. I talked to him later that day, and he says, "Well, I just sort of assumed we were already going together." That was a major dumbass move, and I tell him so. "Oh, crap, what does she want me to do?" He wonders. "That's for you to decide; she's your girlfriend." I answer walking away.
Diego asks Mercedes what color her prom dress is so he can match his tie. She just gets pissed and storms off. "What did I do?" He asks Taylor and I. "Really, Diego?" Taylor says. "You need to actually ask her, dumb-butt." I tell him. He asks her a few days later, and she says, "I know this wasn't your own idea. You seriously needed reminding to ask your girlfriend to Prom? You know what, dance with yourself."

It's April 25th, and I am getting ready for school when Greyson bursts into my room, asking me if I got my dress for Prom yet. "Nope. We are all going on Saturday." I tell him, since today is Thursday. "Alright. I'm gonna order my tux soon, so I need to know what color your dress is. Gah, I love talking to you about this. I'm so excited for Prom, which is extremely weird considering I'm a guy." He replies. I giggle. "Are you ready for school yet, weirdo?" I ask him standing with my arms around him. He nods and returns the question. "Um, I just have to put on my eyeliner and mascara, but pretty much. Just give me a second." I do the rest of my makeup, then grab my jacket and head out the door with Greyson.

That Saturday, Hallie, Taylor, Yolanda, Lana, me, and a depressed Mercedes pile into my car to go look for Prom dresses! "Mercedes, cheer up. You'll still have a ton of fun with us." Taylor tells her. Mercedes just shrugs. Lana, not being fully informed on the situation, asks, "Why did you say no to Diego, anyway?" We all give Lana a look that said for her not to ask. Mercedes breathes in a sharp breath, says, "Diego just assumed we would go together just because we were dating."
"Were? You didn't break up with him, did-" Lana gets cut off by a ticked off Mercedes, who says, "No! We just aren't going to Prom together! I don't know, maybe we're on a break? I just don't know."
"You should probably figure that out. If he thinks you two are broken up, then he might start looking for other girls, when you still think you're together. Save yourself the future drama, and just confront him." Taylor says. We all agree, and Mercedes sighs, "I am gonna sound so stupid. 'Just to be clear, I don't want go out with you. But don't worry, we are still boyfriend and girlfriend. I just don't want to act like I like you right now.' Yeah, I'm sure he'll understand."
"Okay, we're here! Yay, shopping!" I declare, overly happy to lighten the mood. I park the car, and we all spill out of the car to embark on a 'walking on thin ice' shopping trip.
